Attic Blankets
SPS Insulation offers Stabilized Cellulose Insulation R-19 through R-49.
Attic blankets are cost effective since they are easy to install. We install blankets of insulation between the joists or trusses. For uninsulated attics air sealing is performed before adding insulation. In under insulated attics we move existing insulation near common air leakage sites to perform air sealing before adding additional insulation.
FAQs:
1. Do I need a vapor barrier to add insulation?
A common misconception is that all insulations require vapor barriers. However, we don’t recommend the use of vapor barriers with cellulose insulation, except in circumstances of exceptionally high moisture levels, such as an indoor pool facility. The reason is that cellulose is the only insulation that actually manages moisture.
A vapor barrier is not only unnecessary with cellulose or sprayed high performance insulation, but also can be counter- productive, especially during the summer months in air-conditioned buildings, when warm, moist air passes through wall assemblies and condenses on the outside of the vapor barrier. The hygroscopic nature of cellulose insulation allows it to manage and wick moisture from areas of greater to lesser concentrations, thus preventing any significant amount of moisture accumulation.
2. Please explain Why Cellulose does not need a vapor barrier?
Winter time: Moist interior air escaping from your warm home is the largest reason fiberglass needs a vapor barrier: fiberglass cannot block the air flow, it is not an air barrier! Moisture vapor moves two ways, in moving air, and diffusion through solid surfaces. Air movement accounts for over 98% of the moisture, and it is the primary cause for moisture related building failures. By blocking the movement of moisture-laden air, cellulose reduces moisture movement by nearly 95% making vapor barriers unnecessary when you choose cellulose for your home!
Note: Some building codes call for an air barrier or vapor barrier. Work with your local officials regarding compliance. A Provider Member of CIMA can supply you with data regarding vapor barriers and cellulose.
